For me it is when my son is gone, there is no one else in the house, and I can't get anyone on the phone to talk to..
IT is DEAFENING to hear most times..

it is a harsh reminder that my own family turned their back on me (childhood physical abuse)
as they say (at least in the UK), bitter pill to swallow
